RUG STAIN REMOVAL PROCEDURE HANDBOOK

GENERAL ADVICE FOR CLEANING UP SPILLS

  • Act immediately to prevent virtually any spill from becoming a stain. You can stop further  penetration of the spill, and stop its chemical reaction with the rug's fibers and dyes.
  • Blot; don't rub. The best way to blot any kind of spill is to scoop it up with a spoon.   Scrape off any solids. Dilute the area  with plenty of water. Using a clean towel,  blot up as much moisture as possible.  Blot or brush lightly from the outer edge toward the center of the stain.   Rubbing will spread  the stain. Do not apply a spot remover until you have done a thorough job of blotting.
  • Apply antidote (from stain removal kit below) with a clean dry cloth.   Do not soak. Work from the outer edge to the center.
  • Pat dry with paper towels.
  • Dry with fan or hair drier.
  • Brush to restore pile.
  • Clean Cloths
  • Brush
  • Sponges
  • Dry Cleaning Fluid  To prevent spreading the stain or causing a ring when using the cleaning solvents, always blot or brush lightly from the outer edge towards the center of the stain (especially on pile carpets).
  • Alcohol
  • Glycerine
  • Mild Detergent (containing no alkalines or bleaches)
  • White vinegar
  • Weak ammonia solution (7%)
  • Hair spray

If the cause of the stain is known, follow the instructions listed below.

CANDLE WAX

Place a blotter or brown paper bag over the spot. Put a hot iron over the blotter. Wait a few minutes until the wax is absorbed into the blotter. Repeat if necessary. Move the iron constantly, not letting it stay in one place.

CHEWING GUM

Press ice cubes against spot. Wait until it becomes brittle and breaks off. Use spot remover dry cleaning fluid to vanish last traces.

GLUE

Saturate the spot with a cloth soaked in vinegar or alcohol.

INK FROM BALL POINT PEN

Saturate the spot with hairspray. Allow to dry. Brush lightly with a solution of water and vinegar.

OLD, DRY OR STUBBORN STAINS

Saturate, blot and brush. Repeat this operation as often as necessary to remove the stain completely.
